Battleship North Carolina is inviting students in kindergarten through grade 12 aboard for a new era of hands-on learning. Beginning this fall, two immersive educational programs—Price of Freedom and Eagles Island Immersion: Island in the Stream—are available for school groups.

“These programs combine investigative learning with powerful storytelling,” said Dr. Jay Martin, Executive Director, Battleship North Carolina. “Students step into history and the natural environment in ways that spark curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of our shared past.”

These innovative, curriculum-based programs were developed collaboratively by Museum Curator Mary Ames Booker and Museum Educator Trevor Freeman as part of a broader transformation of educational programming envisioned by Dr. Martin when he assumed leadership of the Battleship in 2024.  The “Price of Freedom” takes the Battleship back to its original mission to preserve and interpret the stories of the 11,000 North Carolinians killed during World War II.  “Eagles Island Immersion” connects the Battleship to the past, present, and future of Eagles Island and introduces a long-term commitment to environmental programing.

About the Programs

  • Price of Freedom (Grades 3–5 & 6–12 | Tuesdays & Wednesdays)
Step aboard the WWII Battleship North Carolina to explore the vital roles played by North Carolinians and crew members during wartime. Students uncover stories of courage, sacrifice, and resilience while connecting themes of teamwork, duty, and service to their own lives.
  • Eagles Island Immersion: Island in the Stream (Grades 3–5 & 6–12 | Thursdays)
Investigate the unique ecosystem of Eagles Island through inquiry-based outdoor exploration. Students discover the relationship between people and the environment—past and present—while fostering curiosity about science, ecology, and conservation.

Hands-On, Standards-Based Learning

Led by trained staff and volunteers, both educational programs align with North Carolina curriculum standards and emphasize active engagement, teamwork, and discovery.
