In a powerful tribute to American naval heritage, 11 cadets from the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps — Torpedo Squadron 8 — raised American flags aboard the historic Battleship North Carolina today in honor of the U.S. Navy’s 250th anniversary.

Precision, Protocol, and Pride on Deck

The cadets followed official U.S. military flag protocol, performing the ceremony with full honors. They executed precise formations, salutes, and commands as they attached each flag, hoisted it to full staff, and secured it in place — mirroring the traditions carried out by generations of sailors before them.

The ceremony marked the launch of the Battleship’s 250 Flags for 250 Years campaign — a tribute series that begins the Battleship’s recognition of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary in 2026. The Battleship will also be lit Navy blue and gold in honor of this milestone anniversary.

Carrying the Watch Forward

Dr. Jay C. Martin, Executive Director of the Battleship North Carolina Memorial, spoke to the impact of the moment:
“Watching the next generation carry forward the traditions of those who stood watch before them is deeply moving. These cadets aren’t just raising flags — they’re walking in the footprints of their heroes,” said Martin. “Their actions today show that the values of service, honor, and duty remain strong — and ready to be passed on.”

A Moment of Pride for the Cadets

“This ceremony shows pride in our country and its people. It helps us honor those who lost their lives in battle,” said one cadet. Another shared, “My dad served in the military. Serving my country is a passion — I want to continue the tradition. I’m grateful I had the chance to do this today.”
